Maths & Numeracy / Mathemateg a Rhifedd
At Blackwood Primary School pupils will learn to develop their wonder of number and its role in the world and their everyday lives. Through engaging and exciting maths and numeracy learning, we look to develop a sense of skill, knowledge and understanding for pupils in the context of everyday life and problem solving. They will use the What Matters statements and 5 mathematical proficiencies to help enable them to confidently solve problems and reason effectively in a world surrounded by maths!
Pupils at Blackwood Primary School will learn to be numerate through their own exciting curriculum enabling them to develop towards the four purposes. At Blackwood Primary we plan and resource effective opportunities for the learners to improve their numeracy skills and use them to improve all other AoLEs across the curriculum.
Curriculum for Wales outlines that children should work towards the following stages in maths during Primary Education:
Early Years (Nursery to Reception)
recognise and use numbers, counting confidently up to at least 20 – forwards and backwards
begin to use basic times tables, counting in 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s.
Children must grasp the concept of place value, understanding that numbers are made up of tens and units – using visual counters/toys to support.
identify and describe basic shapes, both 2D and 3D,
use measures by comparing lengths, weights, and capacities (e.g long/short, longer than/shorter than, heaviest/lightest, full/empty)
Year 1 -2
-
recognise and use numbers up to 100 – forwards and backwards
-
to add and subtract numbers – starting with single digits then 2 digits
-
Pupils should begin to learn the 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 times tables
-
Begin to apply multiplication and division in various contexts – e.g sharing/groups & sets of ….
-
A strong grasp of place value is essential, allowing children to understand the significance of digits in numbers – Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, Units
-
identify and describe common 2D & 3D shapes and their properties (name, numbers of faces, sides, corners)
-
measuring objects using appropriate units (non-standard – number of hands/feet/counters/sticks/cups then moving to standards units – cm, metres, kg, grams, litres, millitres)
Year 3 - 4
-
read, write, and compare numbers up to 10,000 – forwards and backwards from different starting points
-
To know times tables facts – 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s and 10s
-
Multiply and divide numbers using written and mental maths (1 digit by a 1 digit number, 2 digit by a 1 digit, then 2 digit by a 2 digit)
-
They should grasp place value and be able to identify in any 5 digit number - 10s Thousands, Thousands, Hundreds, Tens and Units
-
explore a variety of geometric shapes (2D and 3D), identifying their properties – name, number of faces, sides and vertices
-
develop skills in measuring length, weight, and capacity – cm, metres, km, grams, kg, millitres and litres
-
Begin to talk confidently about maths by solving word problems and applying mathematical reasoning, thereby fostering a deeper understanding of the subject.
Year 5 – 6
-
Understand and use numbers up to 1,000,000 – counting forwards/backwards from different start points
-
To know times tables facts – 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s, 10s, 11s and 12s
-
Mastery of multiplication tables up to 12x12 is essential for various calculations.
-
Recall properties of a range of 2D and 3D shapes
-
Name, faces, sides (2D), edges (3D), vertices, types of angles, lines of symmetry
-
measure and compare lengths, weights, and capacity using appropriate units. (including decimal notation/relationships – e.g 1.25 m = 125cm / 2.3 L = 2300ml)
-
Reinforce growing confidence to talk about maths by solving word problems and applying mathematical reasoning, thereby fostering a deeper unders tanding of the subject.
