Leaders and staff at Blackwood Primary have worked tirelessly to create a positive, nurturing atmosphere where pupils feel supported, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential. According to Estyn’s evaluation, the school provides an exciting range of learning opportunities that allow pupils to develop a broad set of academic, social, and life skills.
“Teachers across the school plan tasks like sewing, woodwork, and cookery to help pupils apply and extend their skills independently. These activities successfully foster creativity, resilience, and initiative.”

“The defining feature of our school is the positive attitude and behaviour of our pupils. Their enthusiasm for learning is truly inspiring. We have high expectations in all areas of school life, and our dedicated team is committed to giving every child the best possible start. We know that primary education is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and it’s our responsibility to make it the best it can be.”
Mrs K. Davies – Headteacher
One of the key strengths noted by Estyn was the school’s ability to support nearly all pupils in making strong progress. Staff at Blackwood Primary ensure that children develop their communication skills from a young age, helping them become confident speakers, readers, and writers. The school’s strategic focus on supporting pupils’ mental and emotional well-being ensures that students not only excel academically but also develop as independent, resilient learners.
“There are beneficial systems in place to support pupils with additional learning needs (ALN). Consequently, nearly all pupils with ALN make good progress towards their individual targets.” (Estyn June 2025)
Mrs. Davies also reflected on the school’s success, saying, “I’m thrilled that Estyn has recognised the strength of our vision, culture, curriculum, and the relationships that underpin our success. Our pupils thrive because we offer them meaningful and relevant learning opportunities.”
Estyn highlighted the school’s varied and dynamic teaching methods, which include creative use of both indoor and outdoor learning environments. Teachers at Blackwood Primary make excellent use of their resources and work collaboratively to meet the diverse needs of all pupils. The school also makes a concerted effort to develop pupils’ Welsh language skills, digital literacy, and mathematical abilities.
The school’s approach to professional development is another key factor Estyn recognised in its success. “There is a strong culture of reflection at the school. All staff are committed to developing their own practice to enable them to best meet the needs of the school’s pupils.” This culture has contributed to the school’s strong sense of teamwork and collaboration, fostering an environment where pupils thrive.
Looking ahead, Blackwood Primary is determined to build on its successes and continue to provide a stimulating, supportive, and inclusive environment for all its pupils. The school’s leadership team, staff, and governors remain focused on continuous improvement, working closely with the community and external partners to ensure the best outcomes for every child.
Blackwood Primary School is excited for what the future holds and will continue to strive for continued excellence in all areas of education. With high standards, a supportive environment, and a clear vision for the future, the school is committed to shaping well-rounded, confident learners who are ready to take on the challenges of tomorrow.
